Each year, thousands of refugees are invited by the U.S. government to seek safety and freedom. Forced to flee conflict or persecution, many have survived for years against incredible odds. They step off the plane with next to nothing but their dignity, hope and determination.
Flown in United States by organizations like Catholic Charities, American Red Cross, International Rescue Committee, the refugees are made to settle down in any of the 50 states of US.
Texas has become the top destination for refugee resettlement, with Dallas the second largest hub, according to the recent State Department statistics.. It became the main destination for resettlement as of last year, rising from number five in 2001. Affordable housing and better economy compared to other states, is making Texas as a favorable state among the refugees.
ICNA Relief Dallas has been diligently involved with refugee facilitation work from past 7 years. Most of the refugees have received lots of help in various facets of their lives. Innumerable number of furniture drives was conducted and were home-delivered to the newly arrived and existing needy refugee families. Regular food drives was also conducted to help provide their staple food based on their ethnicity.
From past 10 months, most of the refugee families are taking advantage of ICNA Food Pantry by receiving their much needed food and other items once a month.
When their federal help reaches to the exhaustion level, it is ICNA Relief Dallas who steps in to pay their rental and utility bills. Upon request from some families, ICNA Relief Dallas enrolled them in the local Community College to initiate their education. Funds collected from Zakat funds are being utilized to provide the rental and utility assistance.
ICNA Relief Dallas also directs the refugee families who are sick to numerous free medical clinics conducted in various masajids of DFW metroplex. Warm clothes drive was conducted many times and was provided to them.
ICNA Sisters had involved in providing ESL classes to Burmese sisters.
